About the fortress

Smederevo Fortress is an outstanding medieval architectural monument located at Omladinska 1, in the city of Smederevo, Serbia. The fortress rises on the banks of the Danube River and is one of the largest in the Balkans. It was built in the 15th century by despot Đurađ Branković and served as a residence for Serbian despots.

The fortress is in the shape of an irregular triangle and is surrounded by massive walls with 25 towers, making it an important defensive structure of its time. Inside the fortress, there once were a palace, churches, and residential buildings, forming a real city protected by powerful walls. Throughout its long history, the fortress has undergone numerous sieges and restorations.

Today, Smederevo Fortress is a popular tourist attraction, which is also used as a venue for various events. Strolling around the grounds, visitors can enjoy picturesque views of the Danube River and the surrounding landscapes. Despite the fact that only one of the walls has been restored, it still makes a strong impression with its grandeur.

The place is steeped in legends, one of which tells of the tragic story of the construction of the fortress. This historical site won't leave anyone indifferent thanks to its rich history and special atmosphere, and visitors mark it as a must-visit. However, it is worth noting the issue of litter at the foot of the walls, which sometimes disappoints visitors.
