RICHARD III
Richard III personifies a fallen angel, who in his quest for redemption must punish all the evil on earth. The hump on his back is hidden under a black cloak, symbolizing the dark yet simultaneously radiant nature of power and historical events. His crippled legs in cothurni foreshadow tragedy and the inevitability of fate. In the end, the horse that leads him has wings and carries him from curse to freedom. Richmond, the white angel, inherits this cloak, but, despite the victory, remains only a victor without true peace.
The roles are further enhanced by drummers, pipers, torchbearers, and carriers of the State and History cloak.
