TALES FROM ODESSA / THE RED CAVALRY
I am Isaac Babel, born on July 13, 1894, in Odessa, then part of Russia. Odessa, like many other picturesque cities, has become an inspiration for writers of various eras. Turgenev wrote about fresh morning dews and peaceful nights, while Dostoevsky and his character Karamazov trampled on uneven pavements enveloped in heavy fog. Gogol sang of the bright sunlight of Ukraine, while Gorky enthusiastically greeted the sun in his works. Time passes, but sources of inspiration remain eternal. The journey southward, towards light and freedom, has lasted for centuries. There is a sense that the people need a new breath. Is a new literary messiah among us, coming from the sunny steppes? More than a century has passed... And I, executed on January 27, 1940, in Moscow, left my stories as an eternal record.
