WHITE GUARD - Bulgakov / Babel - Dorćol People's Theater
Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin watched the play "The White Guard", then known as "The Days of the Turbins", about twenty times. Mikhail Bulgakov had to modify this piece several times due to censorship demands. The action is set in December 1918 in Kiev, which is torn between the White Guards and the Red Army, as well as between the forebears of the Nazis and an unfortunate dream of eastward expansion. The investment of new capital to make the Slavs fight among themselves is an old military tactic. On the streets, there is gunfire, and among the participants are disillusioned officers and betrayed women. Betrayal and infidelity permeate the story, while Krleža adores Gavrilo Princip. With Isaac Babel's razor-sharp sentences, the question arises whether the dead Slavs are just fertilizer for history. What do the hungry poets under the pale autumn sun think about it?
