Is Prince Myshkin, a figure reminiscent of Christ, truly the key to understanding Christianity as Dostoevsky sees it in a world full of contradictions? Can we view Nastasya Filippovna as Mary Magdalene, one who can only be understood and accepted by the 'idiot', like the prince — the best among people in the worst circumstances? In ancient Greece, an idiot was someone uninterested in public affairs; according to Dostoevsky, can someone similar to Christ become such only by immersing in personal sufferings and joys, and then in the joys and sorrows of others? Are Sonya Marmeladova, the impoverished prostitute, and Nastasya Filippovna, the kept woman, the only saints worthy of love in Dostoevsky's universe? Raskolnikov will commit murder as an unnecessary act according to André Gide or an act of freedom according to Charles Manson — will Rogozhin do the same to Nastasya Filippovna, before the prince who would resurrect like Christ? As usual, the questions are more important than the answers, and the world finally ends in chaos and holy madness, like all the heroes of Dostoevsky.
