In Belgrade, there will be a premiere of a theatrical project called "INOSTRANKA," which is a modern stage interpretation of Sergei Dovlatov's novella "Foreigner." The leading role in this project is played by actress Masha Mashkova. The director of the production is Maxim Didenko, considered one of the most significant figures in contemporary theater. "INOSTRANKA" is a modern theatrical project that tells the story of a person at a life-defining crossroads. The main focus is on themes of choice, loss, hope, and the ability to maintain a sense of irony even when the established world is falling apart. The production is aimed at audiences from different countries and cultures, making the personal story universal. The performance poses the question of what can drive a person to leave their home, contemplating politics, circumstances, internal crises, or a sudden feeling of "alienation" in their life. "INOSTRANKA" combines literary foundation with the personal story of the actress. It is not just a stage version of Sergei Dovlatov's novella but also a candid conversation of Masha Mashkova with the audience about life in emigration, attempts to build a career in Hollywood, life in Los Angeles, as well as reflections on memory, family, and growing up. The production is done in the format of a live dialogue with the audience, without the fourth wall, which makes it ironic, honest, emotional, and therapeutic. The project raises the theme of emigration as a universal human experience. If in the 1980s emigration was viewed as a mundane drama, in our time it has become an existential choice and a kind of leap into the unknown. However, the essence remains the same: every person feels like a "foreigner" at least once in their life — in a new country, profession, or even in their own destiny.
