When you tap "directions," your phone solves an incredibly complex puzzle in milliseconds. With millions of roads and constantly changing traffic, how does it work so fast? We'll peek under the hood of navigation apps, exploring the clever algorithms that make this possible. We'll look at Contraction Hierarchies — a trick that pre-processes road networks by creating shortcuts through less important intersections. Then Transit Node Routing, which uses major highway interchanges as stepping stones for long routes.

We'll also cover Highway Hierarchies, SHARC, and Arc Flags — techniques that pre-compute which roads are actually useful for different destinations. But algorithms are only half the story. We'll also explore how app designers balance speed with accuracy — why your GPS sometimes suggests seemingly longer routes, how the interface decides what information to show you, and the tradeoffs between battery life and real-time updates.

No heavy math required — just curiosity about how one of our most-used technologies actually works.
